Thanks for this nice information. I think e-therapy and programs like Health 2.0 are also some good options for old age people. Through such programs, the patient will have the opportunity to research is treatment options and take a proactive role in coming to a joint decision with his doctor.

Health Care proxies sound like they can help disabled elderly who cannot communicate the decisions themselves and can put faith in a trustworthy appointy to make those decisions to help them.

It's important to understand that since the passage of "The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule", it is mandatory to have a copy of a health care proxy for anyone to receive information from a physician or health care facility regarding a relative who is hospitalized or who wants/needs you to get information regarding their medical conditions and consult or advise them regarding their health care records or history.

A Health Care Proxy is an instrument (or document) that allows a patient to appoint an agent to make health care decisions in the event that the primary individual is incapable of executing such decisions. [1] Once the document is drafted, the primary individual continues to be allowed to make health care decisions as long as they are still competent to do so. Health care proxies are permitted in forty-nine states as well as the District of Columbia. Health care proxies are by no means mandatory; rather they allow the patient's wishes to be followed even when he/she is incapable of communicating them

As always you should check with an attorney who is licensed in your state. This site in the near future will have member eldercare attorneys who will be available to respond.
