Try this exercise: do the tai chi form at the same pace as your breathing.....breathe very slowly. At first just try it for the first part (25%) of the form & let me know how it feels.

There is a reason why the Chinese use the saying,"A journey of million miles begins with the first step". So too for us Grey hairs. We are at top of our Mt and looking over a vast horizon of possibilities. What you choose to do with these is up to you. Chi is energy and energy both physically and mentally fuels our existence.
Begin in the beginning and not worry about form, appearance and the million of questions stopping you from doing.
Chi can be compared to tuning in a radio, off station and you have static on station and you an have the choice of beautiful music. Ability to tune yourself in begins with quieting your thinking and be in the moment you are in just as i am in this typing moment right now.
Find a place or create a place of quietness were you may begin to tune yourself in, into yourself into your surroundings
this is your time not to be shared with anyone but yourself and your mind.
From here you can begin your journey to discovery self discovery, world discovery. All matter to you is between your ears it's up to you to research and find this 'Chi within you. Nice and easy it goes until you feel it flow. Now let it go follow it were it goes it's path is one of energy and enlightenment.
Tons of literature and many streams of thought to chose from but it all starts by beginning.

Thanks for your thoughts. Swimming of course is a wonderful all around exercise. Tai Chi Chuan in my opinion would be a good complement, especially when it's not convenient to get to a pool. I like practising every nite before bed, I find it relaxing, meditative. Additionally Tai Chi is a very powerful martial art.

Nickolas:
Thanks for your comment.

I have studied privately with Tai Chi Master (and friend) William C.C. Chen for over 40 years. During my lessons he imparts his thoughts and refines his ideas. His Master was Chen Man Ch'ing. Both of them have many books and have taught the Yang Form of Tai Chi Chuan all over the world.

I will continue to blog about my thoughts regarding his teachings. Stay tuned.

Hi Marty it's about time you shared your wisdom of Tai chi Chuan with the rest of the world. Entering the senior circuit at 63 I can attest to the physical and mental benefits of practicing Tai Chi.
Marty turned me 'ON" as they said in the old days to this particular style of Tai Chi and I have to say it was one of the best turn on's in my life.
This particular form can be practiced by senior's well into their eighties and nineties. Its like watching water flow effortless and rhythmical a quite serenity of conscience movement developed over the course of centuries by devout practitioners. This not some quick fix marketing generatered exercise crap. This is the real deal.
No jerky Olympian movements here just a series of well connected slow movements a lego set of building blocks designed to fit perfectly with ones coordination ability. Here's another sixties maxi um "When in doubt try it out".
You have nothing to lose but your aches and pains.
Your a positive force in the universe Marti let the energy flow.

Thank you for the comment. Tai Chi Chuan has been tested in studies that are focused on balance and coordination. I am working on designing protocols so that seniors might have an easier time learning the forms. You can check it out further by visiting www.williamccchen.com (I am listed as an instructor on the site.) Tai Chi is good at any age and is, incidentily, a powerful martial art. Check out Ang Lee's movie, "Pushing Hands".
